Leaving a Legacy

Dollar Academy was founded through a bequest in the Will of Captain John McNabb, a poor boy from the parish who sought his fortune at sea and became a wealthy London merchant.

Leaving a gift in your Will helps us to continue this tradition of philanthropy and is the best way to ensure we can preserve and strengthen the school for future generations. Such gifts can provide a source of much needed funds which are not otherwise available through standard tuition fees. Your gift will help:

• Keep Dollar Academy at the forefront of education and innovation in the 21st Century.
• Provide financial aid to allow as many young people as possible to benefit from a Dollar education.
• Preserve Dollar’s historic buildings and develop new facilities.

Leaving a legacy can take many forms and we would be delighted to work with you to ensure any funds you leave are used in a way that is meaningful to you. For example, your legacy could benefit an area of Dollar that particularly inspires you; be that supporting a specific academic subject or co-curricular activity through to creating a bursary to support pupils who cannot otherwise afford fee-paying education. Alternatively, you can leave it to the discretion of the school to use where it is most needed at the time your gift is received.

Whatever you choose, you can be assured your gift will enrich the lives of those at Dollar Academy. As Dollar Academy is a registered charity (The Governors of Dollar Academy Trust SC009888), all legacy donations made to the school are exempt from UK Inheritance and Capital Gains Taxes – read more on the HMRC website. By leaving even 1% in your Will, those closest to you will inherit 99%. You can of course leave more if you want to.

As a Legacy donor you will be invited to our annual Donor Lunch and other whole-school events.

To leave a Legacy to us, you simply need to include our charity number and contact details in your Will. We would advise speaking with your solicitor to assist with the writing of your Will or adding a codicil.
