Transitioning to the Senior School
Junior 2 is a unique and pivotal year at Dollar Academy.
It is a time for pupils to consolidate their learning, ensuring they are fully prepared to access and thrive within the Senior School curriculum. It is also a time to celebrate achievements—both academic and personal—that have shaped their journey so far.
Leadership opportunities abound in Junior 2: some pupils are elected as House Captains or Pupil Council leaders, others take on buddying roles with younger pupils in the Prep School, and many champion charitable initiatives.
All pupils undertake an individual science investigation and enjoy a week of self-discovery at the Junior residential trip to Argyll, culminating in the Junior 2 musical—a fitting finale to their primary school careers.
By the time they move to the Senior School, Junior 2 pupils are confident, capable, and familiar with the campus, as well as many of the staff and pupils they’ll encounter.
Despite this, great care is taken to ensure a seamless transition. Key measures include team-teaching opportunities with Senior School staff, regular communication with the dedicated Head of Year for Form I, a full transition day in the Senior School, and PSE sessions led by Senior specialists.
Additionally, bespoke Support for Learning transition meetings are held, along with informal visits to the Support for Learning department, and detailed information handovers ensure that every child’s needs are understood and met.
