Today\u2019s young people face a world full of new challenges and possibilities. At Dollar Academy,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0focused on offering practical, engaging learning opportunities that help them understand and shape the world around them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As workplaces evolve, so too must our teaching and learning spaces.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0why the Academy is building an ambitious new facility: the Futures Institute.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We are fortunate to have been supported in our work by globally renowned architect, and former Dollar pupil Andrew Whalley OBE. Andrew \u2013 who designed our\u00a0Futures\u00a0Institute \u2013 is the current\u00a0Chairman\u00a0of\u202f<\/span>Grimshaw<\/span><\/a>, and the architect behind many award-winning structures including\u202fthe\u202f<\/span>Eden Project in Cornwall<\/span><\/a>, the\u202f<\/span>International Terminal at Waterloo<\/span><\/a>\u202fand the\u202f<\/span>Experimental Media and Performing Arts\u00a0Center\u00a0in New York<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The current UK education system has\u00a0largely been\u00a0inherited from the 18th century, and\u00a0some\u00a0aspects of it have\u00a0changed little\u00a0since then. There are, of course, traditions that must be cherished but, at the same time, the world around us is moving\u00a0phenomenally\u00a0quickly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Education Scotland and the SQA are undergoing major reform. The traditional emphasis on single-subject exams is also under scrutiny. The Hayward Review (2023) has called for a broader, more flexible system that includes interdisciplinary\u00a0learning\u00a0and skills-focused qualifications.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

At the same time, Learning for Sustainability has been identified as a national priority\u00a0by the Scottish\u00a0Government,\u00a0and a 25-point action plan was launched in June 2023. The Cabinet Secretary for Education has said, \u201cThe strategy is about placing sustainability at the heart of the education system, revolutionising what and how students learn.\u201d\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

These reforms signal a generational transformation in Scottish education, redefining how young people learn and prepare for life beyond school.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

We expect interdisciplinary learning with industry and universities to become increasingly widespread within schools throughout Scotland, and through FIDA, Dollar will be at the forefront of this exciting\u00a0movement.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Launched in\u00a0May 2021,\u00a0FIDA (the Futures Institute at Dollar Academy),\u00a0is\u00a0our innovative educational\u00a0initiative\u00a0which responds to the need for change and\u00a0with a vision to tackle three fundamental challenges: 1)\u00a0the need to find a compelling alternative to traditional classroom teaching and exams;\u00a02)\u00a0equitable access to education;\u00a03)\u00a0sustainability.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We have come a long way since 2021, and now through our Global Challenges and accredited qualifications, FIDA provides young people at Dollar Academy and across Scotland with unique opportunities to\u00a0experience a new way of learning while\u00a0developing\u00a0important (meta) skills such as problem-solving, creative thinking, collaboration, and global citizenship \u2013 which are all essential for\u00a0young people\u00a0to thrive in the world beyond school.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We are particularly proud of our International Sustainability Diploma, a qualification worth 24 points at SCQF Level 6 (equivalent to one Higher) which has UCAS and international recognition. The qualification is now being delivered in 12 schools across Scotland, free of charge.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Our evaluation of the\u00a0Diploma\u2019s\u00a0pilot year in 2024\/25 showed that 100% of teachers and pupils would recommend the qualification to others. The Futures Institute is exciting\u00a0for many reasons, but mainly\u00a0because of what will happen inside it\u2026not only will\u00a0the building\u00a0provide the extra teaching and recreational space our school needs, it will also give us a dedicated base to grow FIDA\u2019s educational offering – from the International Sustainability Diploma to new Global Challenges and projects \u2013 our vision is\u00a0have a building\u00a0that young people are excited about, and where they can go to\u00a0think, design, create, test and collaborate; all integrated under one roof.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

All Dollar pupils will spend time in the Futures Institute and benefit from the new and exciting educational opportunities it supports. The Institute will also allow more young people from across Scotland to access these experiences.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cScotland finds itself in a fast-changing, digital world. We aspire to play a leading role in that world, so it is vital that young people leave school with more than just knowledge taught in the classroom. FIDA is\u00a0<\/span>demonstrating<\/span>\u00a0the enormous potential of a new way of working that will equip young folk with the skills they need to thrive and succeed in the modern workplace. And this new way of working demands a new kind of space. I really feel that the proposed new building, with innovative spaces to think, design, create,\u00a0<\/span>collaborate<\/span>\u00a0and communicate, is exactly what FIDA needs to offer these vital educational experiences to young people from across our country. Professor Ken Muir, the independent advisor to the Scottish Government\u202fon the replacement of the Scottish Qualifications Authority, has publicly endorsed FIDA:\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Central to the Academy\u2019s founding principles is a core belief in the transformative power of education and our responsibility to support as many young people as possible in their development.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

FIDA\u2019s International Sustainability Diploma, free online provision,\u00a0and\u00a0our\u00a0in-person workshops,\u00a0have allowed us to further develop our\u00a0traditional\u00a0bursary provision in a modern and scalable way.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Guided by the principles of\u202f<\/span><\/span>community wealth building<\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0organisations like Dollar Academy can\u00a0<\/span>also\u00a0<\/span>play a key role in supporting\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>strengthening<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the local economy by building strong ties with the community and businesses.<\/span>\u00a0Through\u00a0<\/span>FIDA\u00a0<\/span>we look forward\u00a0<\/span>to building partnerships that will allow us to play an even greater role in the\u00a0<\/span>surrounding area<\/span>s<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
